Thornton Beach is a small community nestled between the World Heritage National Park and the Great Barrier Reef. It is a community of only 13 blocks of land and Thornton Beach House & Bungalows are the only holiday accommodation here. We are conveniently located between Cape Tribulation and Cow Bay, approx 20 minutes drive from the Daintree River.
We offer a choice of either double bungalows with Ensuite bathroom and tea & coffee facilities with private verandahs and ocean views, or a fully equipped 2 bedroom holiday house with all the trimmings. All you need to bring is food, toiletries and sunscreen. If you are a large family or group you can rent the entire property. We can sleep up to 5 in the house and 4 in the bungalows (2 in each bungalow). We are only a 1 minute walk to stunning Thornton Beach with its breathtaking views and great photo opportunities. For prices and availability please have a look at our web site – www.thorntonbeach.com
The Area
There is easy boat launching on the beach from the northern end of Thornton’s, as well as a tidal boat ramp at the southern end. It only takes ½ hour to the Great Barrier Reef for great fishing and snorkelling.
There is also a crocodile cruise – Cape Tribulation Wilderness Cruise – the only tour operator on Cooper’s Creek. You will have an exclusive tour searching for these prehistoric creatures.
A few minutes drive south you will find Cooper’s Creek Wilderness Walks. They have guided day and night walks through their private fan palm dominated rainforest, which is millions of years old.
There are lovely self guided walks as well. You can walk south along Thornton Beach to the mouth of Cooper’s Creek, with beautiful views of Thornton’s Peak – Queensland’s 3rd highest mountain, or north, along the rocks, to Noah’s Beach, which is a beautiful long flat beach, great for swimming and beachcombing. Again there are spectacular views at the mouth of Noah’s Creek. These beaches are usually secluded for most of the year.
There is a Café on the beach which is open for breakfast and lunch and it’s only a short drive to a variety of restaurants, boardwalks and local activities.
Directions
It is very easy to find Thornton Beach House & Bungalows. It’s basically two roads from Cairns. Heading north, travelling along the Captain Cook Highway, it’s approx 2.hours to the Daintree River turnoff. Turn right and cross the river on the ferry which runs from 6am to midnight 7 days a week. When you’re on the other side, travel for approx 20kms and you will come to Thornton Beach. We are on the left, opposite Café on Sea.
Climate
December to March is our wet “green” season when the rainforest comes alive. The creeks are flowing with crystal clear rain water, with many deep pools to swim in, and the rainforest is nice and healthy, drinking in all that beautiful H2o. From April to August is the coolest time of year with temperatures from as low as 12 degrees at night to a pleasant 25 degrees during the day. A lot of our southern Australians come north to get away from their cold winters. September to November is a beautiful time of year, with calm oceans, blue skies and a comfortable 18 – 30 degree temperature range, excellent for reef trips, snorkelling, fishing and hiking.
